(Rob:) Funny story from today: We were on our way in to the hospital for rehab this afternoon, and Tessa asked me if I would start singing a song, ANY song. I asked why, and she said she had a really annoying song stuck in her head (aka an earworm) and she wanted some help replacing it with something else.
So I started singing the first thing that popped into my head, "Yo-Yo" by The Osmonds (what else?).
Then she says...(wait for it-) "But that's the song I was trying to get RID of!"
So here it is: my favorite YouTube video- it's the Osmond Brothers on the Flip Wilson Show in 1972 performing "Yo-Yo". Those who know me well have already been subjected to this clip many times, but I really love it. You can just tell they worked really hard at the choreography and I think they really nailed it!
Zanny and I were both big Osmonds fans back in the day. They were the first concert I ever saw (Iowa State Fair: summer 1974 with my aunt Barbara and cousin Julie) and I definitely would have converted to Mormonism at the time given the slightest encouragement. Zanny correctly noted that this performance was clearly designed specifically to make the best use of the stage, which is a small round platform with a catwalk leading out to it. She also noted that the performance took place before Donny adopted purple as his trademark color.
Check it out here and try not to smile:
Look, I know these guys aren't destined for the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame any time soon, but I would put Merrill Osmond's pop vocals up against anyone else's of the era any day.
So, any musical guilty pleasures or embarrassing first-concert confessions out there?

Here's Tessa in the pool today with her Bronco worms:
And I think this hospital security dude has the freakiest toupee in history:
The photo really doesn't do it justice (as you can see I was sneaking it from behind a newspaper) but you gotta hand it to him: the indoor shades, monochromatic pompadour--- Elvis is back in the building!
I need a life.
I know that it's days later, BUT I must comment on this one...
I'm pretty sure that my first concert was Leo Sayer in Topeka. I was about 14 yrs old. Went with my best friend. My parents dropped us off and picked us up at a designated spot after the show. Shortly after that, b/c Amber and I were such concert junkies, we went to see Bachman Turner Overdrive at the Topeka Municipal Auditorium. Again, I can't believe my parents let me go alone with just a girlfriend. Those were different times. We stood on the floor for this one and interestingly the memory I have is that we were surrounded by people smoking hootchy hootchy. And we even figured it out. I'm sure we breathed in alot of second hand smoke that eve.
Okay, that's my story and I 'm sticking with it.

Dear Tessa,
Moments of sadness are inevitable and probably very healthy. I have them occasionally myself. They kind of clear the slate so you have room for whatever is next. I totally agree, everyday that goes by is
one day closer to the day when the cages come off and your legs are long and straight. Concentrate
on the positive as you are doing great!
Suzanne called this morning with some wonderful ideas for a fun weekend, so we will make our decision as to where to go this afternoon and head out for "who knows where" tomorrow. Aspen, the Maroon Bells, etc., etc., are all possibilities. I can hardly wait!
I am loving and missing you, "yo-Yo Girl."
Hugs to all. A big one for Madi for being such a terrific friend. :-)
Love,

After watching the Osmond video two times, Kara still does not believe that Donny Osmond is a boy. "Are you sure? It's just that he sounds like a girl!" Also, Sam was super aquaman with us at the pool yesterday. Jumped off the high dive a couple of times like a pro. And even went down two very big slides (I had him count the steps to the top - 45, I think). One slide is curvy - his hint to me was "If you lay down, you go faster!" And the other slide he tried only once, because the line was shorter. We like to call that one "The Wedgie". Straight down and super fast. Good job Sam! I really need to enter this century and get a fancy phone with a camera to record these things. More mail on the way!

Hang in there Tessa! You're mom is right - every day is one closer! In my day - WOW the Osmonds were my favorite group. I had so many of there 8 tracks - now that is telling how long ago that's been. Just think Donnie O. is my age or very close.

My first concert was Tom Petty who coincidently was here Tuesday night. Too bad I had a 14 hour day. However, my worst concert of admittance has to be Rick Springfield. Oh, I wish that I had Jessie's girl.

Best I can come up with concert moment wise is a trip me and the college roommates made to Des Moines to catch the tremendously uncool combination of Loverboy and Journey in concert. Took me a few weeks to recover my mojo after that one. I think I'll be able to top it this September, though. For my 3M 25th service anniversary awards dinner, the entertainment for the evening is a group called "Star Diamond". Give you five bucks if you can figure out what they'll be playing. Hint - think Elvis impersonators (coincidence?).
Later,

Rob,
YOu need a life. . . I just had a margarita at Julie's, watched SYTYCD, and as I watch the Osmonds in the kitchen all alone, I think I got some of those moves DOWN. Especially the little hoppy skippy jumpy thing. "Just like a YO-YO" I have got the moves. . . . . . no one here to take a picture of it for a blogable moment in time. Too bad. Three more day of interminable work, is that a word Webster Juicy? Sam told me last night he wants both his parents and Tessa in the same place, because then he won't be so alone when he goes into a different room. He jumped off the high dive at the Sarson's pool. No picture. I'll find something to blog in a bit. Sorry Tessa had a moment of sadness right when I called her. She couldn't say why. Does anyone have to wonder, trapped in that cage? Hang in there Peach. Everyday is one closer.
