Hi!
Happy Birthday, Rob! I reminisced yesterday about what I was doing eight years ago when Tessa was born. (It was during Cody's high school graduation party that you called with the news that Susan had delivered a beautiful baby girl.)
Wow! What fun!

The night before you were born, we had company for dinner in our Hawkeye Apt; I remember serving goulash. We sat around and talked that evening without a clue of what was to come within a very short time. Bill left and your dad and I went to bed at about midnight. At 1:00 I woke up knowing full well, although two days early, it was time for the hospital. So, we grabbed our already packed suitcase and headed to U.of I. hospital. We were both nervous as you know what, but extremely excited. I was wide awake all the way through, but I really felt little or nothing due to the spinal they had given me. Labor was very fast for a first child and you were born less than four hours later -- all whopping 9 pounds and 3 ounces of you! (I also remember a large group of medical students coming in to observe right in the middle of things. Yuck!) With a spinal, I always compared your birth to having a huge tooth extracted! I felt the pressure but no pain. That was back in the days before ultra sounds, so we were delighted to finally realize that you were a boy. Your dad was so counting on a boy, so he was on cloud nine. That was also back in the days when babies and moms stayed in the hospital for 3-4 days. I will never forget bringing you home in that little black Fairlane Ford we had -- your face was still swollen from the forceps they used, etc., but you were sooo beautiful -- and so big! I was holding you in my arms in the front seat, there were no rules about where babies should ride back then. Your dad and I talked all the way home about the many things you would have to learn in your lifetime. As it has turned out, you learned even more than we ever dreamed you would! You have done so well, Rob, with every aspect of your life, we couldn't be more proud of you. Please have a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY. I love you very much.
Mom
P.S. To summarize, 39 years ago today, I experienced the first of three happiest days in my entire life. :-)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TESSA JEAN!!!!!! I hope you got my message. I tried to call you to wish you a happy birthday, but I guess you were munching on cheesecake and having a fun birthday at the Plaza. I will try again tonight. I love you and I am glad that you are 8. 8 is so very great! Love, Zanny
